Description

Colonel Richard M. Scott was born in Charlotte, NC on 26 July 1939. He entered the Army in April 1958, and while attending Infantry Advanced Individual Training was selected to attend Officer Candidate School (OCS). Colonel Scott completed OCS in June 1959, and was assigned to the lst Battle Group, 10th Infantry at Fort Ord, CA as a mechanized rifle platoon leader. Upon departing Fort Ord in June 1961, Colonel Scott was assigned as a company commander at Fort Carson, CO, until June 1962. From June 1962 until January 1963 he served as a company commander at Fort Polk, LA. His first tour of duty in Vietnam was as an ARVN Infantry Battalion advisor from January 1963 to January 1964. Upon return to CONUS in January 1964, he was assigned to the Mobility Department at the United States Infantry School. While there, Colonel Scott completed Airborne training and the Infantry Officer's Career Course. In 1967 he completed his work on his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Nebraska. | In August 1967, he was assigned to the Republic of Vietnam where he served as the S-3 and the Bn XO with the 4th Battalion, 503d Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade. He also served as the Brigade S-4, 173d Airborne Brigade from February 1968 to July 1968. Graduating from Command and General Staff College in June 1969, he was assigned to the Pentagon as a Staff Officer for the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel. In June 1972, he was reassigned to the Office of Military Instruction at the United States Military Academy at West Point. During his tenure at West Point, he completed his Master of Science degree at Long Island University, was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in March 1975, and became Chief of Plans Branch, Office of Military Instruction where he remained until his assignment to USAREUR. In December 1975 Colonel Scott assumed command of the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division (M). He commanded the battalion until June 1977, at which time he became the Deputy Community Commander where he served until June 1978. After completion of tour in USAREUR Colonel Scott attended the Army War College from August 1978 until June 1979. In July 1979, he became the Assistant Chief of Staff, Gl, for the 5th Division (M) where he served until January 1981. In January 1981 he was assigned as the Deputy Chief of Staff for the 5th Infantry Division (M) and served there until 12 April 1981. In 14 April 81, Colonel Scott was assigned to the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS. He was the Staff Operations Committee Chief in the Department of Command. | Colonel Scott's decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal w/4 Oak Leaf Cluster, and Purple Heart.
