Fred O. Jackson

Colonel Fred 0. Jackson began his distinguished military career upon joining the Georgia National Guard as a Private in 1935. He advanced to the grade and position of 1st Sergeant, the rank he held when he entered the active military service in 1941. | In May of 1942, Colonel Jackson entered OCS at Fort Knox, Kentucky, from which he graduated in August 1942. Following his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant of Armor, Colonel Jackson served with the 7th Armored Division throughout World War II, to include the European Theater of Operations. | Following World War II, Colonel Jackson served in a wide variety of command and staff positions ranging from Battalion to Department of the Army level. While serving in the 43d Division in Germany, Colonel Jackson commanded the 1st Battalion, 172nd Infantry Regiment, as well as the 143rd Tank Battalion. His service with the 2nd Infantry Division includes commanding the 2nd Infantry Division Support Command and later the 3rd Brigade. Colonel Jackson finished his career as commander of the Mobility Department, Fort Benning, Georgia. | His staff experience has been as diverse and complete as his command experience. Colonel Jackson has served as an Aide-de-Camp, Battalion S-3, Executive Officer of an Armored Cavalry Regiment, and Staff Officer in the G-4 Section, Third U.S. Army, and G-3 Section in both the 7th and 8th USArmies. He has also served in the office of the Inspector General, Department of the Army, in the Combat Develop Section, USCONARC, and as Chief of the Weapons Division, Combat Developments Command. | Colonel Jackson's military education and training includes the Armor School Advanced Course, the Command and General Staff College,and the U.S. War College. Colonel Jackson is also a graduate of the University of Omaha. | His awards and decorations include: Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal w/ V Decice and Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal, French Croix de Guerre and the Glider qualification badge. | Colonel Jackson retired in August 1967. He spent the next 29 years living in the Columbus, Georgia, area where he owned and operated a number of Real Estate Companies. Colonel Jackson passed away in 1996.
