Ferguson was commissioned an Infantry Officer from Officer Candidate School 1 May 1970. His first duty assignment was as Assistant Operations Officer, 3d Squadron, 12th Cavalry, Budingen, Germany. | His subsequent duty assignments include: Adjutant, Commander Troop B and S-4, 3d Squadron, 12th Cavalry, Budingen, Germany;  Special Assistant to Chief of Staff, Allied Land Forces, Southeastern Europe, Izmir, Turkey; Foreign Area Officer, Defense Attache Office, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Assistant Director, Training Management, Defense Language Institute; Desk Officer for Africa, Intelligence Directorate, Headquarters U.S. European Command, Stuttgart-Vaihingen, Germany;  Concepts and Doctrine Staff Officer, Headquarters, U.S. Army TRADOC, Fort Monroe, Virginia; Defense and Army Attache to Cameroon and Equatorial, Guinea; Assistant for Central and Southern Africa, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, The Pentagon; Defense and Army Attache to the Republic of South Africa, Switzerland, and Lesotho; Defense and Army Attache to Zaire and was designated to become the Defense and Army Attache to Ethiopia in October 1992.
