Colonel Leighton O. Haselgrove, Sr. is a native of Fort Pierce, Florida and entered active Federal Service in January 1961. After a brief tour of duty with the 2d Infantry Division, Colonel Haselgrove entered Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA where he received his commission in Infantry on March 1962. His initial tour of duty was with the 1/29th Infantry at Fort Benning, GA. | His subsequent duty assignments: Platoon Leader, Company Commander, and Battalion Executive Officer, he entered flight school and graduated in June 1965. In 1966, Colonel Haselgrove was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry in Vietnam. After the Armor Advance Course at Fort Knox, he served as the S3, 7th Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry, Central Highlands, Vietnam. He later became the Commander of B Troop which spearheaded the 4th Infantry Division’s drive into Cambodia in May 1970. In 1973, he was assigned to the Armor Center where he served as the Chief, Armor Doctrine, on the faculty in the Armor School, and XO of 2/6th Cavalry. Between 1976 and 1978, Colonel Haselgrove served a tour of duty with Reserve Components at Fort Gillem, GA. Between August 1978 and January 1980, he commanded the 3/5th Air Cavalry Squadron at Fort Lewis, WA. After command, he completed a staff tour with Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, Belgium. After completion of the U.S. Army War College in June 1982, he assumed his present assignment as Chief, Contingency and Analysis Division, J5, USRED.COM. He was promoted to his current rank on 1 November 1982. | Military schools attended include: Officer Candidate School, Flight School, Armor School Advance Course, Armed Forces Staff College, USA War College. | His awards and decorations include: Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal w/2 V devices and 42 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Senior Aviator’s Badge, and various unit and foreign awards. | Colonel Haselgrove is married to the former Rebecca Rainey of Columbus, GA. They have two children, Denela and Leighton, Jr.
