Lieutenant Colonel Lowell W. Hesser began his commissioned career as a Platoon Leader in the 354th Infantry in 1942 at Camp Carson, Colorado. He was promoted to the grade of First Lieutenant and assigned as Company Executive Officer 1943. During this time he served as Battalion S-2 and Battalion S-3 Officer; Battalion S3, 2nd Battalion, 150th Infantry, Panama 1944-1945. | Lieutenant Colonel Hesser was not on active duty during the period 1946-1947. He returned to active duty and promoted to the grade of Captain in 1948 and assigned duties as Commanding Officer, Headquarters and Service Company, 12th AIB, Fort Hood, Texas, 1948-1949; Assistant Intelligence Officer, Headquarters Rycom FECOM Command 1950; Operation and Training Officer (G-2) Headquarters Rycom FECOM command 1951; Promoted to the grade of Major and assigned as Instructor at the Armor Officer Candidate School, Fort Riley, Kansas 1952; G-2, Headquarters Fort Riley, Kansas 1953;  Security Control Officer G-2 Headquarters Rycom FECOM 1954, Deputy Acof S G-2 Headquarters Rycom 8104 AV AFFE 1955-1956; assigned Detachment 2, National Guard Advisor Group, New Haven, Connecticut 1956-1958; Chief Foreign Liaison J2 Section, Korea 1959; Executive Officer, 5th Student Battalion (OC), Fort Benning, Georgia 1960, and promoted to the grade of Lieutenant Colonel and assigned the duty of S-1, Headquarters, The Student Brigade in 1961.
