Major David W. Reiss
Description
Major David W. Reiss is the son of an Army Chaplain. He entered the Army in 1960 as a Private and attended OCS class 6-64 at Fort Benning in 1964. Upon graduation from OCS he was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg. He graduated from the Special Forces Officers Course and then was deployed in August of 1965 to his first tour in Vietnam as the XO of an "A" detachment in the Mekong Delta, with the 5th Special Forces Group. In 1966 he returned to Fort Campbell and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division. During his tour with the 101st he was Bn Adjutant and Bn S2 (1/502 Bn), 2nd Bde S2, and a Company Commander in A/2/501.
He redeployed to Vietnam with the Division as a Company Commander in Dec 1967. During his second tour in Vietnam he served in Hue during the Tet Offensive of 1968. Upon giving up command he was assigned as the Infantry LNO to the Royal Thai Army in Vietnam.
Reiss returned to Fort Benning in 1968, attended the Infantry Officers Advance Course and attended Auburn University on the bootstrap program. In 1971 he was assigned to 5th Corps Headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany.
From 1971-1977 he served in 5th Corps as: Officer Assignments Officer; G3 Plans Officer; G3 Training Officer; and finally, as 5th Corps HQ Company Commander for three years. In 1977 he returned to Fort Benning and was assigned to Directorate of Training. He retired from the Army in Jan 1981 at the grade of Major.
After retirement he served two years as a civilian contractor with Litton Industries at the Army Research Institute. During this period, he wrote a definitive study on MOUT operations, and served as program manager in setting up an austere training base in Honduras.
Mr. Reiss entered the U.S. Government Civil Service at Fort Benning in March 1983. He worked in: DOT as a small-arms, Bradley fighting Vehicle and MOUT training specialist and in DCD he served as an independent evaluator for the Javelin and the Bradley fighting vehicle. Finally, he served as the Deputy TRADOC Systems Manager for the Bradley and Stryker vehicles. He retired from Civil Service in 2003 as a GS 14.
Mr. Reiss worked for UDLP/BAE as their representative at Fort Benning from 2003-2008. He then represented Oshkosh Defense 2008-2011. Finally, he represented DRS Technologies 2011-2015, when he fully retired.
His awards and decorations include: Silver Star, Bronze Star w/"V" and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Other awards include the Order of Saint Maurice and the Army Commanders award for Civil Service. | Mr. Reiss has attended the 47-week Burmese Course at Monterey and has a B.A. in History, a MS in International Relations, a MS in Management, and a MS in Criminal Justice.
