Ralston was commissioned an Infantry Officer upon graduation from Officer Candidate School Class 158-43, 22 January 1943. His first duty assignment was as an Instructor, Training Battalion, Camp, Wheeler, Georgia. | His subsequent assignments include: Platoon Leader, 326th Glider INF, Camp Macall, North Carolina; Platoon Leader, 326th Glider INF, Alliance, NE and Europe; Company Commander, 101st INF Div, Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky; Company Commander, 45th Div, 279th INF, Korea; Company Commander, 47th INF Div, Fort Rucker, Alabama; Company Commander and ADO, 3rd Div, 15 INF, Fort Benning, Georgia and Bamberg, Germany; Army Liaison Officer, U.S. Navy Amphibious Forces Atlantic, Little Creek, Virginia; Assistant G3 and G3, I Corps, Yondong Po, Korea; G3 section, Fort Dix Training Center, Fort Dix, New Jersey; G2 Section, MACV, Vietnam; and Commander, 3rd Army Recruiting Section, Knoxville, Tennessee. | Colonel Ralston retired from the Army and from Fidelity Bank, Philadelphia, as Assistant Vice President.
