Lieutenant Colonel William G. Grieve was commissioned an Infantry Officer upon graduation from Officer Candidate School, Fort Benning, Georgia, Class 66-67 on 20 November 1967. His first duty assignment was Training Officer of Company E, 1st Battalion, 2nd Basic Combat Training Brigade, USATCI, Fort Lewis, Washington.
His notable duty assignments include: Combat Platoon Leader: Company C, 2nd Battalion (Mech) 8th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division, USARPACRVN; Commander, Company D, 2nd Battalion, 320th Regiment, 3rd Brigade (AIT) 80th Division Training, Radford, Virginia; Instructor, Technical Intelligence Staff Officer’s Course, 1st Army Area Intelligence School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; S3, 3rd Brigade, 101st Air Assault, Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Assistant G-3, 24th Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia; Public Affairs Officer, Fort Gillem, Georgia during Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
His military education and training includes: Infantry Officer Candidate School, Basic Infantry Officer Advanced Course, United States Command and General Staff College, PAO Course, Defense Information School and National Defense University National Security Management Course.
His highest military awards include: Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal w/ 1 OLC, Vietnam Service Medal w/ 3 stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/ 60 device, Presidential Unit Citation, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal w/ 4 OLC.
Following his military career, LTC Grieve has served as has served as Knoxville Chapter President, Tennessee State Department President, and a U.S. Army Delegate and National Councilman. He also serves as Vice Commander of Military Order of World Wars, Knoxville Chapter, represents MOWW and ROA for the East Tennessee Military Affairs Council, Life Member of Vietnam Veterans Association and was instrumental in the establishment of the Campbell County Chapter where he serves on its Board of Directors. He travels internationally as part of the U.S. Delegation with ROA for lnterallied Confederation of Reserve Officers (CIOR) as Public Affairs Officer and has served as part of the delegation for The Pan American Union of Armed Forces Reserve Officers (UPORFA). LTC Grieve is also a chevalier in the NATO Priory of America Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem and was knighted in 2017.
LTC Grieve's contributions to his civilian community include 34 years as a vocational agriculture teacher and service as a Future Farmers of America Advisor. As a lifelong volunteer, he was selected for Leadership Campbell County, Tennessee. He has served as President of the Campbell County Habitat for Humanity, President of the Campbell County Arts Council and also served on the Campbell County 4-H Volunteer Leader Organization Board where he was awarded the W.M. & Ruth Hale Tennessee Master 4-H Family District Recognition with his wife, Nancy. He was an Eagle Scout and served on the Eagle Board for the Smoky Mountain Boy Scouts District. As an active member of Lafollette Methodist church, he has served as Lay Leader and as a Sunday school teacher. After retiring from teaching, Grieve moved to Norris, Tennessee where he has served since 2016 on Norris City Council, with one term as Vice Mayor. In his service to the Norris Community, he also serves on the Norris Watershed Commission, Norris Tree Commission, and Norris Water Commission. He has also been involved in the Norris Little Theater as arts director as well as an actor.
