His first duty assignment was as a Training Officer, 3rd Brigade, 100th Division (Training), Lexington, Kentucky. | His subsequent duty assignments include duty with: U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) Control Group, St. Louis, Missouri; 389th Military Intelligence Detachment (Special Forces Group) USAR, Louisville, Kentucky; Executive Officer, Company C, 1st Battalion, 149th Infantry, Richmond, Kentucky; Company Commander, Company C, 1st Battalion, 149th Infantry, Ravenna, Kentucky; Detachment Commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, Comptroller, and Facilities Engineer, Headquarters State Area Command (STARC), Kentucky Army Reserve National Guard (KyARNG), Frankfort, Kentucky; Commandant, Detachment 1, STARC, Troop Command, Frankfort, Kentucky; Director of Facilities, Headquarters, STARC, KyARNG, Frankfort, Kentucky. | General Groves is a registered architect, an attorney and member of the Kentucky Bar Association. In his civilian work, he has served as Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. He is an architect in private practice and an associate professor of architecture with tenure at the University of Kentucky College of Architecture, where he is also an associate dean. He was serving as the Adjutant General for Kentucky at the time of his induction.
