Colonel John N. Knight was drafted into the Army 20 January 1943 and served as an enlisted man overseas in World War II. He received his commission as a Second Lietuenant of Infantry upon completion of OCS at Fort Benning, Georgia 13 December 1945 and served with the Army of Occupation in Germany. | During the Korean War, Colonel Knight served as a Machine Gun Platoon Leader and Rifle Company Commander with 2d Bn, 38th Inf Regiment, 2d Inf Div. After the Korean War his assignments included duty as an ROTC Instructor in Utah; Staff Officer with Headquarters U.S. Army Europe in Germany; Company Commander and Brigade Staff Officer at Fort Ord, California and as G-3 Operaitons Officer in Headquarters III Corps, Fort Hood, Texas. Colonel Knight served in Vietnam from 1963 to 1964 as Deputy Senior Advisor with the 9th Inf Div, ARepublic of Vietnam in the Mekong Delta. He served on the Army General Staff in the Pentagon from 1964 to 1967 and was assigned to Fort Ord in September 1967 where he served as the Battalion Commander in the 2d AIT Brigade. He was promoted to Colonel on 23 April 1968 and assigned as CO, BCT COM GP at Fort Ord, California. | Colonel Knight's education and training includes: the Officer's Advance Course, Command and General Staff College, Extension Course Program of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and Airborne School.
