Wells was commissioned a Field Artillery Officer upon graduation from Officer Candidate School Class 1-81, 20 March 1981. His first duty assignment was on a Team Leader- Nuclear Support Team, 1st Battalion 505th Airborne Infantry. | His subsequent duty assignments include: Battalion Fire Support Officer, 2nd Battalion 505th Infantry, Company Commander, 1st Battalion 321st Regiment, Executive Officer, Headquarters, 694th Maintenance Battalion, Battalion Commander, Headquarters, 363rd Quartermaster Battalion and Commander, 208th Regimental Support Group; Brigade Commander, 1st Brigade, 75th Infantry Division. | His military awards and decorations include: Bronze Star Medal w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal w/ 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, the Parachutist Badge and the Combat Action Badge.
