Colonel Fred T. Brown, Jr. was commissioned an Infantry Officer upon graduation from Officer Candidate School, 24 July 1970. His first duty assignment was as Mortar Platoon Leader, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 235th Infantry, 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. | His subsequent duty assignments include:  Executive Officer, and  Commander, Company B, 2d Battalion, 325th Infantry, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Commander, CSC, 2d Battalion, 120th Infantry, Forest City, North Carolina; S-3 Air, 2d Battalion, 120th Infantry, Hickory, North Carolina; Administrator, 145th Tactical Air Command Clinic, North Carolina Army National Guard, Charlotte, North Carolina Commander, 156th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron (AES), North Carolina Army National Guard, Charlotte, North Carolina; Officer in Charge, Aeromedical Control Element, 1611th AES, Riyad, Saudi Arabia; Commander, Aeromedical Hub, 1611th AES, King Khalid Military City, Saudi Arabia. At the time of his induction Colonel Brown was serving as Commander, 156th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, North Carolina Air National Guard.
