Honorable Elwood H. Bud Hillis graduated from OCS in Class 489, 18 September 1945. He was initially assigned as an Infantry Platoon Leader, in D Company, 63rd Battalion, Camp Wolters, Texas. Later, he served as a Platoon Leader and Train Commander, 1st Battalion, 39th Infantry, Europe, and as a Staff Officer at Fort Sheridan, IL. He was released from active duty on 9 November 1946. | Ms. Hillis then entered the United States Army Reserve, where he attained the rank of Captain. He served with distinction as a Platoon Leader, Executive Officer and Company Commander until his voluntary release in October 1957. | As a practicing lawyer, Mr. Hillis was elected to the Indiana State Legislature in 1967 and served with distinction until he was elected as the Representative of the Fifth U.S. Congressional District, Indiana on 3 January 1971. He holds that position today, and is one of the most respected Representatives in Congress. Mr. Hillis serves proudly on the Armed Services Committee, (Military Personnel and Compensation Subcommittee and The Defense Policy Panel) and the Veteran Affairs Committee (Hospitals and Health Care Subcommittee and Oversight and Investigation Subcommittee). | Mr. Hillis earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Indiana University and a Juris Doctorate from Indiana University School of Law. | Among Mr. Hillis’s military awards are the Overseas Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon (Europe), Occupation Medal (Germany), and World War II Victory Medal.
