His first duty assignment was as Forward Observer, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Meade, Maryland. | His subsequent duty assignments include: Forward Observer, 1-11th FA/ 7th IN Division, Korea; FO/LNO/Division Air Observer, 2-39 IN/9th IN Division, Vietnam; Commander, D Company 6th Training BDE, Fort Knox, Kentucky; Commander, B Company 13th Signal BN 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; Commander, B Company 141 Signal BN 1st Armored Division; and APM PM MSE, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. | Lieutenant Colonel Carnes's military awards and decorations include: Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Legion of merit, Bronze Star Medal (1Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (2Oak Leaf Cluster), Air Medal (with letter “V” device with numeral 8), Army Commendation Medal (2 Oak Leaf Cluster with “V” device), Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (with 4 bronze service stars), Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon (with device 1960), Expert Badge with Rifle Bar, Army Retired Lapel Button, Aviation Badge, and Parachutist Badge. | Following his retirement Lieutenant Colonel Carnes served as a Vice President with U.S. Falcon, a Defense Industry Partner located in Belcamp, Maryland.
