Major David L. Carter was commissioned an Infantry Officer upon graduation from Officer Candidate School Class 1, Fort Benning, Georgia, 17 January 1957. His first duty assignment was a Company Commander/ Battalion S4 at the USATC Fort Bliss, Texas. | His subsequent duty assignments include: Assistant S3, 187th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas; Company XO, Administration Co. 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas; Company Commander, Administration Company, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas; S2/ S3, 1st Corps Special Troops, Korea; Professor of Military Science, Lanier Senior High School for Boys, Macon, Georgia; Senior Army Instructor, Central High School JROTC, Macon, Georgia. | Prior to receiving his commission Major Carter had a very distinguished career as an enlisted Soldier. His service included: Basic Training, 5th Infantry Division, Fort Jackson, South Carolina; Infantry Soldier, GHeadquarters Guard Company, Tokyo, Japan; Special Operations, GHeadquarters First Raider Company, Korea; Sergeant Major, 164th Infantry Regiment, Fort Rucker, Alabama; Operations Sergeant, 164th Infantry Regiment, Fort Rucker, Alabama.
Major Carter passed away July 2021, at the age of 90.
