Lieutenant Colonel Courtney R. Shirley served as Platoon Leader, Company I, 123d Infantry, Fort Lewis, Washington, in 1942, and in 1945, was promoted to Company Commander of Company I, 123d Infantry, in the Far East. | His subsequent duty assignments include: 1946-1947 he was in the ORC; 1948, he served as Company Commander, Company M, 10th Infantry, Fort Jackson, South Carolina; 1949, he attended the Officers Advanced Course, USAIS, Fort Benning, Georgia; 1952, he served as Company Commander in the 6th Infantry, Berlin, Germany; 1953-1954, he served as D Headquarters Comdt, Headquarters USAREUR, Heidelberg, Germany; 1955-1957 he served as Army Advisor, Florida National Guard, Gainesville, Florida; 1958 he served as S1, 1st Brigade, 17th Infantry, Korea; 1959-1961, Lieutenant Colonel served as Executive Officer and later as Department Operations Officer in the United States Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia. | He attended the United States Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1962. | Lieutenant Colonel Shirley’s awards and decorations include: the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge.
