Description

Colonel Gilbert Anthony Nelson was commissioned as an Engineer Officer upon graduation from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia on June 5, 1981. Prior enlisted service with the US Navy included a 1-year tour as a helicopter Door Gunner and Crew Chief in Vietnam. Following EOBC, he reported to his first duty assignment as a Platoon Leader, B Co, 113th EN BN, Indiana Army National Guard.

His subsequent duty assignments include: Executive Officer, Company Commander, and S-4, 113th EN BN, INARNG; EN Staff Officer 12th Special Forces Group (Army Reserve); Public Works and Utilities Officer 308th Civil Affairs Group (Army Reserve); Program Manager J-5, Mil to Mil Program, Headquarter US EUCOM; G-5 Operations Officer, Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, Bosnia Herzegovina; S2/S3 416th Civil Affairs Battalion (Active Guard Reserve); G-5 US Support Group Haiti; Operations Officer 304th Civil Affairs Brigade (Active Guard Reserve); Branch Chief Mobilization Branch, Headquarters Department of the Army, Current Operations G-3 ODCSOPS (Active Guard Reserve); Staff Officer J-3 Special Operations Division Team Chief, Crisis Action Team; Joint Staff J-3 National Military Command Center, and Division Chief; Joint Staff J-3 Joint Directorate of Military Support (Active Guard Reserve); Facility Instructor, US Army War College (Active Guard Reserve); Facility Instructor, Joint Professional Military Education, Joint Forces Staff College, National Defense University.

Following retirement, COL Nelson worked for and later retired from the Director’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation, he retired from the Valparaiso, Indiana Police Department, and until recently, worked as a Deputy Sheriff, Westmoreland County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office.

His military education and training consist of: United States Army Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, United States Army Civil Affairs Officer Course, United States Army Command and General Staff College, the United States Army War College, Advanced Joint Military Education, Joint Forces Staff College, National Defense University.
