Colonel James Edward Trobaugh was born at Kokoma, Indiana, 3 February 1937. A graduate of Kokoma High School and Indiana University. He first joined the Army Reserve as an enlisted member in 1958. He was called into active service during the Berlin Crisis in 1961, and served at Fort Lewis, WA. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in 1964 through the Officer Candidate Program, Class OCRC-1-64, at The Infantry School, Fort Benning, GA. | His first assignment as a commissioned officer was a Platoon Leader with the 70th Division (Training). He graduated from the Infantry Officer Basic Course in 1969, and was reassigned as a Company Commander. He completed the Infantry Officer Advanced Course in 1973 and was reassigned as Battalion Executive Officer that same year. In 1977, he assumed command of the 3d Battalion, 3d Brigade, 70th Division and became the 4th Brigade Executive Officer in 1978. He was reassigned as State Liaison Officer, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, Fifth U.S. Army in 1981 and war promoted to the rank of Colonel on 15 July 1982. | Military schools attended include: The Infantry School-Officer Candidate Course, 1964; Basic Course, 1969; Advanced Course, 1973; Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS, 1979.
