Colonel Douglas Schneeman enlisted in the Regular Army 11 July 1955. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate from the Infantry Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in August 1956. After Airborne Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he joined the 86th Infantry Regiment, 10th Infantry Division in Germany. He served as an Infantry Platoon Leader and Reconnaissance Platoon Leader with this unit.

Colonel Schneeman began flight training in the fall of 1959 and was rated as an Army Aviator in July of 1960. He then served as the Aviation Advisor to the III ROK Corps in the Republic of Korea. On return to the CONUS, he attended the Infantry Officer Career Course and was then assigned to the 11th Air Assault Division for the duration of the testing of the Air Assault concept.

In October 1965 he deployed to the Republic of Vietnam as the Adjutant of the 10th Aviation Battalion. In January 1966 he was appointed Adjutant of the newly formed 17th Aviation Group. His next duty station was Hawaii where he was the Staff Aviation Officer, Headquarters, USARHAW. Colonel Schneeman returned to the Republic of Vietnam in 1968 as Team Chief of the second operational test of the QTII, quiet airplane. The second half of this tour was as Commander, 184th Aviation Company.  On return to the CONUS, he was assigned as Deputy G1, Fort Rucker, Alabama. He attended the Command and General Staff College in 1970 and was then assigned as the G2 of the 4th Infantry Division (M). In June 1972 he assumed duties as Executive Officer to the Deputy Post Commander at Fort Carson. From January 1973 to July 1975, he commanded the 4th Aviation Battalion and in August of 1975 was assigned at U.S. Army Readiness Region VIII, Denver, Colorado.
