Dr. Robert F. Goheen is United States Ambassador to India, having assumed that post 26 May 1977. Dr. Goheen was born in Vengurla, India, in 1919. He graduated from Princeton University in 1940 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts and was granted the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1948 from the same institution. He has received honorary degrees from 26 universities and colleges including Madras, Harvard, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Yale. | Dr. Goheen served as an instructor of classics at Princeton University from 1948-50; as Assistant Professor from 1950-57; and as President of Princeton University from 1957-72, on which date he became President Emeritus. He was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Council on Foundations 1972-76, and President of the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation January-April 1977. He also served in the following capacities: Director, National Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Program, 1953-56; Member Overseers Visitors Committee to Department of Classics, Harvard; Trustee or Director, Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching (Chairman, 1965-66), Rockefeller Foundation, Equitable Life Assurance Society, Dreyfus Third Century Fund, Reza Shah Kabir University (Iran), American Academy in Rome, Institute of International Education; Regent, Smithsonian Institution. | During World War II Dr. Goheen served from 1941-45 in the Army of the United States rising from the rank of Private to Lieutenant Colonel. Decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star and Legion of Merit. From May 1943 through June 1945 he served in Division Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division and was AC of S G-2 during its operations in Leyte and Luzon. | Dr. Goheen was a member of the American Philological Society, Council on Foreign Relations, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Phi Beta Kappa. He is the author of The Imagery of Sophocles’ Antigone, 1950 and The Human Nature of a University, 1969.
