Description

Ending his enlisted career as an E-5, Colonel John E. McGregor attended the 3d OCS Company during 1951. His first assignment as Platoon Leader took him to the 701st Armored Infantry Battalion at Fort Hood. In 1954, Colonel McGregor underwent Aviation Training with the Officer Student Company, Fort Sill. His next assignment brought him back to Fort Benning for the Infantry Officer Advanced Course. After which he became the Executive Aviation Officer for the 3d Light Aviation Detachment, Korea. Upon completion of his school, Colonel McGregor became the Company Commander of B Company, 82d Abn Div. | Two years later, he became a student at the Command and General Staff College. His next assignment found him as Flight Operations Officer with the 937th Engineer Company, Panama. During 1965-66 he became the Commander of Co B, 82d Aviation Branch and the 283d US Forces both in the Dominican Republic. During the next two years, Colonel McGregor was the Commander of the 191st Aviation Battalion in Vietnam; afterwhich, he was elevated to Operations Staff Officer J-3 of Stricom, Tampa, Florida. The next two years of his career were spent as Director of Instruction at the Senior ROTC Instruction Group. At the time of his induction, Colonel McGregor was working as the Area Commander of Headquarters USA Second ROTC Region, Fort Knox. | Colonel McGregor's awards and decorations include: Legion of Merit w/1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Parachute Badge and Master Aviation Wings.
