Description

Colonel Thorveld R. Torgersen graduated from Infantry Officer Candidate School 9 August 1947. He then attended the Engineer Officer Associate Basic Course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, as a student. Following this in 1948, he was assigned as an advisor to the South Korean Army where he served till his return to the United States in 1950 as a unit advisor for the Washington ORC Instructor Group. In 1951, he was Assistant S3 for the Washington Military District Headquarters before being assigned in 1952 to the 587 Engineer Field Maintenance Company in Hanau, Germany. Here he served as a company executive officer and a company commanding officer till 1955. | Colonel Torgersen was at Fort Benning from 1955 until 1957 as a student at the Career Course and as Assistant S3 (Air) at Lawson Army Airfield. Returning to Korea, he served with the Eighth Army Flight Detachment as Executive Officer in 1958 and as Commanding Officer in 1959.  He then served as Operations Officer in 1960 for the Aviation Section, Headquarters, Fifth United States Army and as Assistant Secretary of the General Staff in 1961. | Moving to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1962, Colonel Torgersen was a student at the Command and General Staff College for a year before assuming duties of an instructor there until 1965. In 1966 he became the Assistant Chief of Staff at Fort Leavenworth and left in early 1967 for the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia, as a student. | Colonel Torgersen assumed command of the 212th Combat Aviation Battalion later in 1967 and went with them from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to Vietnam. He returned in 1968 and became Chief, Study Processing Group for the Office of the Assistant Vice Chief of Staff. He is currently attending the Industrial College of the Armed Forces and will graduate from George Washington University with a Masters in Business Administration in September 1970. | Colonel Torgersen’s awards and decorations include: Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal w/5 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry (Gold Star), and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
