Brigadier General (later Major General) Stan Leon McClellans, a native of Wichita Falls, Texas, graduated from Infantry OCS at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 1947. Prior to attending OCS, he served as an enlisted man for 3 years, rising to the rank of 1st Sergeant of Infantry by the end of World War II. In December 1947, he was assigned to the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in Germany. On 1 January 1948, he entered on the first post-war one year Competitive Tour, leading to his RA commission as a 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry.  Between 1947-1951, he served successively as rifle platoon leader, company executive officer, company commander, battalion staff officer, and Aide-de-Camp to the Assistant Division Commander, 1st Infantry Division. In 1951, he attended the Infantry Officer’s Advanced Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, followed by posting to instructional duties with the Combined Arms Department, The Artillery School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. | Volunteering for Korean service, he next served as a company commander, battalion S3 and regimental S1 with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, returning to the United States in August 1953. He participated in 3 campaigns, to include the actions at White Horse Mountain, Kumwha and Kumson. | Following 2 years duty as Advisor, California National Guard, he attended the Command and General Staff College (1955-56) and was then assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Continental Army Command as R&D Coordinator of infantry weapons development. In 1960, following attendance of Armed Forces Staff College, he was assigned as Training Officer, MAAG Belgium - Luxembourg, a position he held until his return to CONUS in late 1963. While serving in Belgium, he qualified for award of the Brevet A wings of the Belgian Para-Commando. | Selected in 1964 for command of the 3d Battalion (Mechanized), 8th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division, he remained assigned at Fort Lewis, Washington until August 1965 when he was moved to Washington, D.C. for duty with Infantry Branch, Officer Personnel Directorate, OPO, Headquarters, Department of the Army. | During the next two years, he served, initially, as an assignment officer, and, later, as Chief of Infantry Officer Career Development Section. Selected in 1967 for senior service college, he attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces from August 1967 to July 1968, advancing to the grade of Colonel in May of 1968. | As a Vietnam volunteer, he assumed command of the 3d Brigade, 4th Infantry Division on 1 August 1968, remaining in that capacity for the next 6 months. Following combat command in the Central Highlands, he served as G3, First Field Force, until departure from Vietnam. During his Republic of Vietnam tour, he participated in 4 campaigns, to include action in Pleiku, Darlac, Kontum, and Binh Dinh Provinces. | General McClellans was elected to the Infantry OCS Hall of Fame in March 1969 and returned to Pentagon duty in August 1969. His assignment was to the Office, Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Headquarters, Department of the Army. After six months duty as Chief of the Army Training Center Division, he became Executive Officer to the U. S. Army Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel in February 1970. He was nominated for Brigadier General, AUS, 15 May 1970 and returned to the 3d Infantry Division as Assistant Division Commander in July 1970. He returned to Vietnam on 15 June 1971 and was assigned as Director of Training and Special Assistant to COMUSMACV.
