Lieutenant Governor Francis W. Sargent, who won election in his first run for statewide office by a margin of 200,000 votes, has held numerous positions in both state and federal government service. These include: Commissioner, Massachusetts Department of Public Works; Commissioner, Mass, Department of Natural Resources; Director, Division of Fisheries and Game; Director, Division of Marine Fisheries; Chairman, Merrimac Valley Flood Control Commission;  Executive Director, the U.S. Outdoor Recreatin Resources Review Commission, Washington, D.C., under both Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy; Advisor, California Park and Recreation Department. He has played an active role in fundraising activities for the Heart Fund, the Massachusetts Bay United Fund, and, in 1956, was the Chairman of the state campaign of the Massachusetts Mental Health Fund. | Mr. Sargent is a combat veteran of World War II, when he served as an Infantry Captain with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy and was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Brazilian Medahlia di Guerra. | He was educated at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied architecture, and he is the founder-owner of a Cape Cod sporting goods and marine equipment business.
