The parents of Lieutenant General Arthur James Gregg signed waivers that allowed him to enlist in the U.S. Army along with his best friend at the age of 17. Following basic training, he was assigned to a unit in Germany as a medical laboratory technician, but when he was told no job was available, he was assigned as supply clerk in a Quartermaster Truck Company.

After about a year, now Corporal Gregg, he was transferred to the 510th Military Police Company to be the units supply sergeant, and he was soon promoted to Staff Sergeant.

Gregg's application to attend OCS was approved and in October of 1949, he was notified that he had been accepted to attend OCS at Fort Riley, Kansas. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant Gregg 19 May 1950 and was assigned to an all-black service unit at Fort Lee, Virginia.

Subsequent duty assignments include: Quartermaster Leadership School Instructor, Company S, Quartermaster Replacement Training Center; Troop Evaluation and Information Officer, 403rd Quartermaster Depot, Korea; Post Quartermaster, later Commander of Headquarters Detachment, Camp Hakata, Japan; Interim Advisor, Pennsylvania Army Reserve; Commander, later Battalion Operations Officer (S3), 3764th Quartermaster Direct Support Company, 95th Quartermaster Battalion, Nuremberg, Germany; Logistics Plan Officer, later Assistant Secretary of the General Staff, Army Materiel Command, Alexandria, Virginia; Commander, 96th Quartermaster Battalion (later renamed 96th Supply and Service Battalion), Fort Riley, Kansas; Joint Petroleum Office, Directorate of Logistics, European Command HQ, Stuttgart, Germany; Commander, Nahbollenback Army Depot; Deputy Director, later Director, Troop Support, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Pentagon; Special Assistant, Director of Supply and Maintenance, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Pentagon; Deputy Director Supply and Maintenance, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics; Commander Army and Air Force Exchange System (AAFES), Munich, Germany; Commander, Military Operations, Munich, Germany; Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics; HQ, U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army; Director for Logistics (J-4), Office of Joint Chiefs of Staff, Pentagon; and his last duty assignment, Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Pentagon. After more than 34 years of service. LTG Arthur J. Gregg retired on 31 July 1981. | LTG Gregg completed undergraduate studies at St. Benedict College and graduated summa cum laude in 1965 with a Bachelor's in Business Education. His military education and training include Officer Candidate School, Officer Associate Basic Quartermaster Course, Quartermaster Officer Advanced Course, Army Command and General Staff College, the Army War College and the Executive National Security Program, John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. | LTG Gregg's major military awards and decoration include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Army Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit w/ 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal w/ 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge and the Army General Staff Identification Badge. | In his post-Army career, LTG Gregg held a number of senior management positions in the private sector, including President and Chief Operating Officer of James Martin Government Intelligence, Inc., Executive Vice President and CEO of Steeltech Manufacturing, Inc. and American Coastal Industries Inc. and Vice President and General Manager of Cox Cable, Inc. | LTG Gregg resigned his last job in July of 1996 but continued to serve with many academic and corporate bodies, including Chairman of Excelsior College's Board of Trustees and Advisor to Army ROTC cadre and cadets at Morgan State University. He was elected honorary colonel emeritus of the Quartermaster Regiment and Governor and Vice Chair of the Board of the Opportunity Funding Corporation.
