LTC (Ret) Johnson entered the Army in April 1979 completing Basic Combat Training at Ft. Knox, KY followed by the Officer Candidate School (Class 4-79) at Ft. Benning GA. Upon completion of the Armor Basic Officer Course he reported to the 1st Bn 63rd Armor, 1st Infantry Division in March 1980, serving as a Tank Platoon Leader, Mortar Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, Battalion Adjutant and ultimately commanding Company C. Following command, LTC Johnson returned to Ft. Benning to attend the Infantry Officer’s Advanced Course. Upon completion he was assigned to the G-6 at HQ FORSCOM serving as the Executive Officer to the G-6 and later led a branch supporting a major Command and Control System. In July 1987 having completed the Combined Arms Service Staff School, LTC Johnson reported to the 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea where he served in the G3 as a Plans/Exercises Officer. At the conclusion of his tour he reported to III Corps, Ft. Hood Texas serving on Corps Staff and later with the 1stBrigade, 1st Cavalry Division. In February 1990, LTC Johnson was selected to join an Army Special Operations unit at Ft. Bragg NC and later supported force modernization efforts for XVIII Airborne Corps. In 1992 LTC Johnson, voluntarily transferred to the Reserve Component and began serving as a Systems Engineer within the Defense Industry supporting PEO C3T and PEO IEW at Ft. Monmouth NJ. Returning to Active Duty in December 2000, LTC Johnson was assigned to HQDA, initially with G2 but later to the Objective Force Task Force. This organization reported directly to the Army Chief of Staff and was responsible for the development of future Army operational concepts. In December 2003, LTC Johnson was assigned to the U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt AFB, NE. His organization led one of the first major programs in Cyber Defense responsible for the implementation of network defense applications throughout the Department of Defense. LTC Johnson retired from the Army in 2007.
LTC Johnson received his Masters Degree from Capitol College in Systems Management and a Bachelors Degree in History from Muskingum College. He additionally graduated from the Joint Forces Staff College and the Command and General Staff College. Decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, multiple awards of the Army Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Services Commendation Medal, multiple awards of the Army Commendation and Achievement medals, the Army Staff Badge and the Senior Parachute Badge.
LTC Johnson worked for several Defense contractors in various capacities after retirement from the Army to include Booz Allen Hamilton, Computer Sciences Corporation and the Scitor Corporation. Fully retired since 2013 he lives in the Charlotte, North Carolina area. He is a lifelong runner and avid reader. He is also active with a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting survivors of Agent Orange in Vietnam. LTC Johnson has been married for nearly 43 years and has two children and four grandchildren. He is a second-generation OCS graduate. His father, a highly decorated WWII Infantry Officer graduated from OCS in April 1944.
