Colonel Richard G. Jung, Sr. has served 36 years as a Soldier, Non-Commissioned Officer, and Armor officer in the United States Army. He retired in 2009 having completed a combat tour in Iraq.

Married to Rita Cappelletti of Chiusa, Italy. They have four children, Richard Jr., Alex, Stephen, and Jessica.  Richard Jr, and Alex are both veterans of the Iraq war and Stephen is currently a Major serving at Ft. Hood, TX.  Jessica is a graduate of the American University of Rome, Italy, and works for Yahoo in New York City. Colonel and Mrs. Jung live in Orlando, Florida, where Colonel Jung works as a defense Contractor for Raytheon, LLC.

Enlisting in 1973, he served as a Field Artilleryman and later a Signaleer. During his enlisted years he earned his airborne wings and served at posts in the USA, Italy, and Korea.

In 1979, he was as an Honor Graduate of Ft. Benning's Officer Candidate School, Class 3-79. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and branched Armor, he served at Ft. Riley, KS (2-63 AR).  Three years later he commanded an Armor company in Butzbach, Germany (A/2-33 AR) and then Ft. Hood, TX (A/3-32 AR). After command he attended CAS3 (Combined Arms Services Staff School) followed by an assignment as the assistant to the Secretary of the General Staff for the 1st Cavalry Division. 

In 1989, he deviated from the typical Armor career path by accepting an assignment as a Course Director and Assistant Professor to the United States Military Academy (USMA).  During that period he graduated from Air Assault training at Ft.Drum, NY. Promoted to Major, he attended the Command and General Staff College where he spent “The best year of his life” at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, graduating in 1993.

 Back on the Armor-career-path he served the next three years in Germany as the Squadron S3 for the 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry (Div Cav, 3ID), G3-Training Officer for the 3rd Infantry Division (M) and the Chief, Collective Training, for V Corps.  He deployed the 3ID's Mobile HQs to Russia, as part of the first Peacekeeping exercise with the Russian army, and later deployed the USAREUR- Forward HQs to Hungary in support of Operation Joint Endeavor.  

In 1996, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and took command of an M1A1 tank battalion, the 1st Battalion, 13th Armor (13th TANK) at Fort Riley, KS.  After successful command he returned to USMA as the Regimental Tactical Officer for 1st Regiment until his departure to attend the Army's War College at Carlisle, Pennsylvania (Class of 2001).  Upon graduation he volunteered for duty in Albania as the Chief of the Military Liaison Team until 2002 when he assumed command of the 100th Area Support Group, Installation Management Agency-Europe, in Grafenwoehr, Germany.

 After three years in command he was assigned to NATO (Valencia, Spain) as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G3 Ops, for the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps – Spain.  During that time he deployed to Pakistan on a Humanitarian Assistance mission. He also was a frequent guest speaker at the NATO school in Oberammergau, Germany. In November 2007, Colonel Jung, completed the Joint Professional Management Education II in Norfolk, VA.

In early 2008 he deployed to Iraq as the Team Chief, for the Military Transition Team (MiTT) to the 11th Iraqi Army Division.  During this period he earned his Combat Action badge.  Upon his return from Iraq Colonel Jung was once again assigned to Ft. Riley, KS, with duty at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, as the Special Assistant to the Director, Joint Center for International Security Force Assistance.  He retired from Active Duty on 31 July 2009 completing 36 years of service.
