LTC (R) William Luther Shade was commissioned as an MI officer upon graduation from Infantry Officer Candidate School Class 4-60 at Fort Benning, Georgia on 11 October 1960. His first duty assignment was as Detachment Executive Officer, US Army Security Agency Caribbean, Fort Clayton, Panama Canal Zone.
His subsequent assignments were: Executive Officer, Headquarters Company, US Army Security Agency Training Regiment, Fort Devens, Massachusetts; Operations Officer, Detachment J, 3rd Radio Research Unit, Vietnam; Commander, Company A, US Army Security Agency Group, Fort Meade, Maryland; S3 507th US Army Security Agency Group, Germany DS (7th Army) ; Battalion Commander, 318th US Army Security Agency, Germany DS (VII Corps, 3rd ID & 4th AD) ; S3, 8th Radio Research Field Station, Vietnam; Division Chief, Tactical Division, Force Developments, Headquarters US Army Security Agency, Virginia; Member IOSS Study Group, Office of the Chief of Staff US Army, Pentagon, Virginia; Signals-Intelligence/Electronic Warfare Officer, Assistant Chief of Staff, Intelligence, US Army, Pentagon, Virginia, and Chief of Electronic Warfare Training, US Army Security Agency Training Center and School, Fort Devens, Massachusetts. His last duty assignment capping 21 plus years was Director Training Developments, US Army Security Agency Training Center and School, Fort Devens, Massachusetts.
His military education includes US Army Security Agency Branch Course, US Army Security Agency Advanced Officer Course, Electronic Warfare Staff Officer Course, and the US Army Command and General Staff College.
He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska, Omaha with a BS Degree in Business Administration.
His military awards include Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (Second Award), Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Reserve Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
After his military career he spent 20 plus years in the Defense Industry focusing on survivability of combat vehicles both air and ground from attacks by laser weapons. He was the author of several articles on Lasers on the battlefield. He planned and participated several tests of lasers against both ground and air vehicles in the United State and in Australia
In 2003 he retired from industry. He continued his lifelong service to the Nation in numerous volunteer activities. He was the President of Habitat for Humanity in Nelson County (HOH) Virginia, Commander of Post 15 Virginia American Legion, Board Member of the Nelson County Community Development Board, Member of the Virginia State board for HOH. Moving to Pennsylvania became Director of Keystone Boys State in Pennsylvania, Vice Commander of Gettysburg Post 15 VFW. Served as historian, and member of several committees in his church to include Trustee, Finance, and Endowment. He is a Board Member of the Carlisle Chapter of the Military Association of America (MOAA), He is a life member of MOAA, Association of the US Army (AUSA), Veterans of Foreign War (VFW), Vietnam Veterans of America (VOA), American Legion, Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil war and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
In 2022 was selected for induction in the OCS Hall of Fame and was elected to the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association.
