Julian M. Marchant

Brigadier General Julian M. Marchant enlisted in the Army of the United States on 9 December 1942. He received basic training at Camp Sibert, Alabama. He entered the Army Student Training Program at the University of Oklahoma, and was then assigned to the 97th Infantry Division at Camp San Luis Obispo, California. Upon receiving his commission he joined the Third Infantry Division as a platoon leader in Company K, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry. He served later as company commander and battalion S-3. He was separated from active duty on 4 August 1946. | Upon his separation from active duty he joined the Organized Reserve Corps and later joined the South Carolina Army National Guard on 9 January 1949, where he served as liaison officer with the 118th Infantry. He later served as communications officer and assistant S-3 with the 118th Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to major on 2 June 1960, and served as assistant G-3, Emergency Operations Headquarters, South Carolina Army National Guard. His branch was changed to Engineer on 20 April 1967 when he was assigned as XO of the 122d Engineer Combat Battalion. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel on 23 September 1969 and assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, South Carolina Army National Guard. On 18 September 1970 he was appointed commander of the 122d Engineer Battalion and held this position until his promotion to Colonel on 10 October 1972 when he was transferred to HHD, SCARNG as the State G-4. He held that position until 13 December 1974 when his branch was changed to Infantry upon his assignment as commander of the 251st Support Center, Rear Area Operations. On 5 August 1977 he was appointed a brigadier general of the line and he assumed command of the 218th Infantry Brigade (Mechanized). | Brigadier General Marchant graduated from Infantry Officers Candidate School in 1944; Infantry Officer Career Course, 1964; Command and General Staff College, 1967. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science Degree; from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee in 1948 with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree. | His awards and decorations include: Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Silver Star, Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal, European-Africian-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, South Carolina 25-Year Service Medal. | His civic affiliations include: Member, Associated General Contractors of America; member, Associated Builders and Contractors; member, National Society of Professional Engineers; member, Columbia Contractors Association. He is a former commander, Columbia Chapter of the Military Order of World Wars; State Commander, Military Order of the World Wars; member, American Legion, Sertoma Club, Tarantella Club, Sigma Nu Fraternity, University Associates, National Guard Association, and a member of the Shandon Baptist Church. | General Marchant is a licensed professional Engineer and President of Marchant Construction Company, Incorporated, in Columbia.
