Lieutenant Colonel John Aulbach was commissioned as an Infantry Officer upon graduation from Officer Candidate School, 16 March 1943. His first assignment was as Unit Command Infantry Officer, CRTC, Camp Crowder, Missouri. | His subsequent duty assignments were: France, Germany, and Japan. He served with the 9th Infantry Division as part of the Trident Division during World War II, which was reactivated at Camp Swift, Texas. He then attended Louisiana Maneuvers during the fall of 1943-1944. His respect of his fellow Soldiers and their expertise would show his ability to lead and gain dedication from his fellow Soldiers. After Louisiana training, he was assigned to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, for additional training. He was sent for amphibious training in California with the idea that the 97th would be sent to the Pacific. These plans were changed by the War Department and they began their involvement in the Battle of the Bulge.
